At Pilot Flying J, we are committed to the personal and professional development of our people. Our Management Development Program (MDP) develops high-performing individuals who are strategically aligned with Pilot Travel Center's business initiative while attaining their career goals.
Here is an overview of how our Training Development Program works:
PFJ Management Training Program (PMTP)
This training is conducted at a certified training location with one of our top performing management teams. During this 20-day program, participants learn everything from operating a POS system to reading financial reports.
Management Development Program (MDP)
Upon completion of PMTP, participants are assigned to a permanent location where they will begin ongoing development training. The MDP program is a structured, modular training program that introduces important areas of our business and teaches how to manage each effectively. This program utilizes an e-learning environment, classroom instruction, and on-the-job activities to solidify learning.

Key Principles and HR 101
This session instructs how to effectively use Key Principles when communicating with others. Also covered is a review of the legal side of human resources and our approach for improving performance.
People Performance Tools
This session focuses on attracting, hiring and retaining team members using our recruiting and retention tools. An overview of our travel center/restaurant infrastructure and the tools to be operationally successful is also included.
NOC and 7 Key Impact Areas
This module is dedicated to teaching how to drive one of our most important financial indicators, Net Operating Cost. Instructions include what makes up NOC, how to improve it at the facility level, and an introduction to the 7 critical areas of our business which should be the focus of day-to-day operations; labor and losses, merchandise and restaurant operations, cigarettes and deli, and facility revenue. Each of these modules covers how to effectively impact and grow business.
Pilot Flying J University
Throughout a management career with Pilot, employees are invited to attend PFJ University, the training facility in Knoxville, Tennessee. Whether employees are new members of the PFJ management team or seasoned veterans, PFJ is committed to ongoing development. At PFJ University, employees learn operational, financial and leadership skills, as well as participate in team building activities.
